Shreveport Fire Department to welcome Belgian firefighters

The Shreveport Fire Department will welcome 10 visiting firefighters from Belgium for a full week, starting Wednesday Shreveport Fire Chief Brian Crawford says.

Belgian Battalion Fire Chief Paul Vanlook and his Belgium Fire Observers visit major fire departments throughout the United States annually to study successful fire service programs.

While here, the group will stay at assigned fire stations across the city, and also will visit various support divisions within the department for a behind-the-scenes look at operations to observe the department’s best practices.

After a welcoming ceremony Wednesday, the group will begin to visit area stations and divisions, meet with the chief and even manage a little sightseeing.

"We've never been to Louisiana before, and we look forward to working with the Shreveport Fire Department, which is considered the busiest fire department in Louisiana," Vanlook said.
