To all the members of the shreveport Fire Department

Batt. Chief Paul Vanlook got the chance to speak to the Shreveport Councilmembers today.

Here is what he said :

When I contacted Chief Crawford about a year ago, I got a quick reply that they would look into our request. I called the Chief's office and gave them a few references of cities that we had visited before. Within 2 weeks we got the final thumbs up and started working.  We announced the trip to the fire community in Belgium and Holland.

There was some hesitation at first, but we got this 10 - man team togheter, that was ready and willing to come to the northern part of Louisiana. We looked at statistics on websites, and that looked promising. We googled the internet and found interesting facts, but realized that Shreveport was kind of a gray area in the tourist landscape. When we arrived last wednesday, we were brougt to the different stations where we were assigned, we immediatly saw the diversity of the city, just like everbody who will travel thru the city on I20 or I49. The difference was that were no ordinary visitors. We got to stay in the Firestations and could start our exchange of ideas and information. Man, those firefighters could ask questions. Where was Belgium, How big are your firestations, Why did you all come here, what kind of money you have. Well, we didn't stop talking for the next five days. We gave them all the information they wanted, and we got a look behind the scene of well organized, well equipped and very motivated fire department. The guys in the firestation are proud to show how everything is don overhere. They are proud to serve the neighborhood they are assigned to. And they showed what brotherhood in the fire service is not an idle word.

So we, as new found friends, were accepted in the stations, not as a bunch of funny talking foreigners from abroud, but as brothers that were there to help out for a week. And guys who come over to help, need to be fed very well. This southern hospatality will be in our stomachs for a few days, and in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

Chief Crawford, Chief Sanders, Members of the Shreveport FD. On behalf of all of us , Thank you very much for the friendship you gave us and we hope to meet one day in our country on the European continent.
